Green Fertilizer - Can Farming Stop Harming?

Bird poop was once more expensive than gold. This ‘guano’ helped feed a growing world before Haber-Bosch transformed farming with synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. But making and using fertilizer now causes about 2% of global emissions, through fossil-fuel-based production and nitrous oxide released from soils. A cleaner future for fertilizer could combine green ammonia, precision application, nitrogen-fixing crops and nutrient recovery, helping to feed billions without costing the Earth.

How this solution scores

  • Impact3 / 5Green fertilizers can sharply cut carbon dioxide from production and nitrous oxide from fertilizer use.
  • Speed3 / 5New practices take years to reach farms, but then cut emissions immediately.
  • Cost3 / 5Precise use saves money, but green ammonia costs well above the fossil version.
  • Readiness3 / 5Enhanced fertilzers are already in use but low-carbon production is lagging behind.
  • Nature4 / 5Cuts farm runoff, pollution, acidified soils and ocean dead zones.
