Batteries

The Missing Piece of the Energy Transition

Over two centuries ago, Alessandro Volta stacked metal discs and salty cardboard to create the first battery. Today, batteries power phones, cars and increasingly entire electricity grids, storing solar and wind energy until it is needed. The battery race now spans lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow and metal-air designs, all competing to become cheaper, cleaner and longer-lasting enough to keep a renewable-powered world running day and night.

How this solution scores

  • Impact4 / 5Batteries unlock both electric transport and on-demand renewable power.
  • Speed4 / 5Factories and installations scale in months, not decades.
  • Cost3 / 5Costs have fallen sharply, but long-duration electricity storage gets expensive fast.
  • Readiness4 / 5Mass-produced today, but long-duration types are still developing.
  • Nature1 / 5Mining battery metals harms water and land, though recycling is improving.
