Carbon Capture

Can We Pull Carbon Back Out of the Air?

Carbon capture can stop CO2 before it reaches the atmosphere or remove it directly from the air, then store it underground or turn it into useful products. Options range from capturing emissions at factories to direct air capture and nature-based removal, each with different costs and limits. It could help tackle stubborn emissions from steel and concrete, but carbon capture works best alongside the faster priority: burning far fewer fossil fuels.

How this solution scores

  • Impact3 / 5Needed for hard-to-clean industries, but no substitute for cutting emissions.
  • Speed3 / 5Plants, pipelines and storage sites take years to approve and build.
  • Cost1 / 5One of the most expensive per tonne of CO2 avoided out of all solutions.
  • Readiness3 / 5A few large plants exist, but direct air capture is still tiny.
  • Nature2 / 5Energy-hungry, and captured CO2 is often used to pump more oil.
