Energy Storage: How Do You Store Sunshine?

Energy storage saves electricity for later, helping wind and solar provide reliable power around the clock. The challenge comes in three forms: storing power for hours, days and entire seasons, using technologies including batteries, pumped hydropower, gravity, compressed air and green hydrogen. No single system can do everything, but together they could keep clean electricity flowing whenever it is needed.

How this solution scores

  • Impact5 / 5Storing clean power is essential for grids to run on renewables.
  • Speed3 / 5Batteries install quickly, but pumped hydro and hydrogen stores take years.
  • Cost3 / 5Batteries suit short-term backup, but longer storage gets expensive.
  • Readiness4 / 5Pumped hydro and batteries are proven, longer-term storage is developing.
  • Nature2 / 5Some storage methods need mining or land, while others have little impact.
