Fusion Energy

Could Humans Build a Star on Earth?

Fusion combines atoms to release the same energy that powers the stars, promising vast amounts of low-carbon electricity from tiny quantities of fuel. We enter the race between tokamaks, stellarators and laser fusion, where plasma must be controlled at extraordinary temperatures. The science is real, but the engineering remains difficult and expensive. Fusion may arrive late, yet its long-term potential is enormous.

How this solution scores

  • Impact5 / 5If it works at scale, it could change everything: limitless clean power from seawater.
  • Speed1 / 5Building a fusion industry will take decades, even once it works.
  • Cost1 / 5Experimental reactors cost a fortune and sell no power yet.
  • Readiness1 / 5Still an expensive physics experiment; no commercial reactor exists.
  • Nature3 / 5No meltdown risk and no long-lived waste.
